Box Score 2 LAREDO, Texas – For the second time in as many weeks, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team split a midweek doubleheader with Texas A&M International winning 9-1 in game two in six innings after losing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh in the opener on Tuesday afternoon.
In the second game, Kingsville turned up the offense scoring nine runs on 12 hits in a 6-inning, run-rule contest. The Javelinas scored in every inning but the fifth.
The Hoggies crossed the plate seven times in the first three innings.
After tallying twice in the first, Kingsville scored three times in the top of the second.
Erica Graham, who finished 3-of-3, singled and scored as
Bailey Offill reached on an error.
Cortnee White, who also singled crossed the plate on a ground out, while Offill plated the final run on a double by
Adela Gomez.
Castro extended the Javelina advantage to 7-0 in the third with a 2-run double to right. After TAMIU scored its lone run in the third Kingsville added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Javelinas had 12 hits led by Graham's three.
Myrissa Sanchez, Gomez, and Castro each had two hits. Graham had a team-high three RBI, while Sanchez and Castro each had two RBI.
Kat Tapley (2-5) earned the win as she allowed one run on three hits. Lauren Denny pitched the final 2-2/3 innings allowing just one hit. Mariena Gallardo (6-11) suffered the loss.
In the first game, Kingsville had its chances early leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first with one away. With one away Castro was hit by a pitch and moved to second as
Valerie Ramirez was hit by a pitch. Gomez loaded the bases with single, but the next two batters struck out with the bases loaded.
The Javelinas had a chance to push across the go ahead run in the top of the seventh with game deadlocked at zero. Offill reached on an infield single and advanced all the way to third as Castro reached on an error. Offill would be thrown out at the plate as Ramirez hit into a double play.
The Dustdevils would score a single run in the bottom of the seventh as Brittany Mussett led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. With two away, pinch runner Samantha Gutierrez scored on a double to center by Kyndall Reaves.
Sarah Johnson (6-8) earned the win for TAMIU with three innings of 2-hit softball.
Carlie Clark (4-16) was the hard-luck loser allowing just the one run on four hits.
Kingsville heads to Angelo State for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
