Box Score 2 PORTALES, N.M. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team battled back in game two to split with Eastern New Mexico University in a doubleheader on Friday, 9-1 and 9-2.
In game two, the Javelinas (13-41 overall, 4-22 LSC) struck first with three runs in first inning. The first run came when
Bailey Offill reached first on a fielding error, stole second and scored on a throwing error. Then,
Valerie Ramirez scored after being walked, stealing second, and was driven in when
Erica Graham doubled to center field. To end the first inning,
Adela Gomez singled to left field to drive in Graham.
ENMU answered back in the bottom of the second when Erica Armendarez singled to center field to bring in Beatriz Caporal.
Kingsville took control of the game in the third inning and never looked back. The Javelinas would score two runs in the third, one in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth.
The runs in the third came as Ramirez doubled to right field, Graham singled to shortstop and both advanced on a passed ball. Ramirez was driven in when Gomez hit a sacrifice fly into right field. Graham scored on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning,
Carynn Gonzales was walked, advanced to second after
Cortnee White hits a sacrifice bunt and scored on a fielding error. The run in the fifth inning came as Graham singled up the middle was driven in when
Myrissa Sanchez singled to right field.
Kingsville's last runs of the game were scored when Offill doubled to left center, Ramirez singled through the left side allowing her to score. Graham came to bat for the Javelinas and doubled to right field to drive in Ramirez.
Eastern tried to recover in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not. The Zias scored one run when Eric Velasquez homered to left field.
Carlie Clark (5-19) was credited with the win for Kingsville. Clark pitched a complete game allowing three runs with two earned on eight hits.
Cailin Garmon (6-20) suffered the loss for ENMU. Garmon put in two innings of work for four runs with three earned on three hits.
In game one, the Zias (14-39, 2-23 LSC) got on the board in the first inning when Amanda Martinez, scored on a wild pitch. EMNU scored again when Kyra Sirag singled to the pitcher, advanced to second on a throwing error and allowed Audrey Velasquez to score. Eastern would gain two more runs in the third inning as Marleyna Pinon reached on a fielding error and was able to score after Erica Velasquez hit a sacrifice bunt. The fourth run for the Zias was scored when Erica Armendarez drove her in with sacrifice fly.
Kingsville scored in the sixth inning when
Valerie Ramirez scored on a passed ball after being walked and advancing to second on a play where
Myrissa Sanchez was out at first base.
Eastern exploded in the sixth inning with five runs on five hits. Armendarez, Cailin Garmon, Amanda Martinez, Alberta Medina, and Audrey Velasquez would cross the plate to end the game with a run rule.
Garmon (6-20) pitched a six innings and finished with one run with none earned on two hits. She also fanned five batters.
Kat Tapley (3-8) picked up the loss. Tapley pitched 5.1 innings with nine runs with six earned on 11 hits.
The Javelinas close the series with ENMU and finish regular season play with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
