Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team fought back from an early deficit Saturday afternoon to take a 5-4 lead, but could not answer a pair of 3-run innings by Tarleton State falling 10-5 in the Lone Star Conference series finale.
The Javelinas fall to 6-18 overall on the season and 1-5. The TexAnns improved to 10-15 and 3-3 in the conference.
The visitors scored three times in the top of the first inning scoring a pair of unearned runs off
Carlie Clark. After Melody Mayse walked to start the game, she came around to score on back-to-back 1-out singles by Bailee Mauldin and Kendra Mendoza. With two away, Amber Clifford reached on an infield error allowing Mauldin to plate. Ashley Findorak singled to right to knock in the final run.
After TSU's Clifford drove in a run in the third to make it 4-0, Kingsville worked its way into the lead.
In the fourth,
Taylor McGill lined a two-out single off Randi Fentress (6-7) to right driving
Carynn Gonzales and
Adela Gomez, who reached on singles.
The Javelinas took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Myrissa Sanchez led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Bailey Offill.
Cortnee White reentered to run and scored on a as
Jaeleen Castro reached on an error. With two out, Castro raced home ahead of the throw on a double by
Valerie Ramirez. Gonzales, who had a team-best three hits, brought in Ramirez for the go-ahead run.
The lead did not last long as the visitors scored three runs on three hits in the sixth for a 7-5 lead.
After Mayse singled to start the inning, the Javelinas turned to
Kat Tapley (1-2) on the mound in relief of Clark. Tapley allowed the TexAnns to load the bases with a walk and infield single. She then walked Mendoza allowing Mayse to score for the tying run. Two other runs crossed on an infield grounder and a base hit by Findorak.
In the seventh, Stogsdill had a 2-run single to start the scoring and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mauldin for a 10-5 lead.
Kingsville had nine hits led by Gonzales with three. McGill had a team-best two RBI. TSU had 15 hits led by Mayse and Taylor Wells with three each.
The Javelinas next head to Wichita Falls for the LSC Showcase. They will play six LSC games in four days beginning with Thursday's game against West Texas A&M at 6 p.m.
