Box Score 2 KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team claimed is first Lone Star Conference win of the season on Friday winning the first game of its doubleheader 2-1 over Tarleton State, but fell 16-8 in the second game.
The teams will conclude the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the first game, the Javelinas (6-17, 1-4) rode a stellar pitching performance from
Carlie Clark to a 2-1 win. Clark pitched six scoreless innings before allowing a solo home run in the seventh to TSU's Kendra Mendoza. Clark (2-8) scattered six hits and had six strikeouts to earn her second win of the season.
Kingsville wasted little time putting its two runs on the board crossing the plate twice in the first inning.
Bailey Offill led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. Offill came around to score on a double by
Adela Gomez off TexAnns starting pitcher Randi Fentress.
Valerie Ramirez responded with a double to the gap in right-center field.
Clark would make the two runs stand as Fentress limited Kingsville to one hit in the final six innings but dropped to 5-7.
In the second game, the Javelinas found themselves in an early hole as the TexAnns plated 12 runs in the first two innings.
The visitors crossed the plate eight times in the first on five hits off
Ariel Kellogg (3-8) coupled with four errors by Kingsville. In the second inning, Tarleton took advantage of three walks and two hits to add four more runs for a 12-0 advantage.
The Javelinas fought back staving off the run rule with seven straight runs.
Kingsville plated two in the seventh as Offill drove in Corrine Brassell with an RBI single and advanced to second on an error. Offill came home as
Jaeleen Castro singled to center and the TSU outfield misplayed a second ball in the inning.
After Clark reached on a fielder's choice,
Taylor McGill and Brassell reached on back-to-back errors.
Myrissa Sanchez, who ran for Clark, and McGill scored on a double by
Cortnee White. Offill hit a sac fly to right bringing in Brassell for the third run of the inning.
Kingsville pulled to within five runs in the fifth with two more runs. With one away,
Valerie Ramirez walked and moved to second on a single by
Carynn Gonzales. Clark drove in Ramirez with single, while Gonzales plated as McGill reached on an error. The Javelinas had an opportunity to extend the inning, but stranded a pair of runners.
TSU dashed any hopes for Kingsville to compete a comeback with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 16-7 lead.
McGill doubled in Ramirez in the bottom of the seventh for the game's 24
th run.
Kingsville finished with eight runs on 11 hits. Gonzales and Clark each had two hits to lead the Javelinas, while Offill and White each had two RBI.
Melody Mayse led the TexAnns with four RBI and four others each drove in two. Ashley Findorak was 3-of-3 with three runs scored. Amber Clifford and Erika Menchaca also crossed the plate three times.
Kellogg suffered the loss falling to 3-8. Brenna Hennan picked up her fifth win. She allowed seven runs with just one earned.
