Javelina Men’s Basketball Team Set For Midwestern State In Tournament

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team takes to the hardwood on Wednesday at 2:30 in the first men's game of the 2014 Lone Star Conference Championship at the Allen Event Center when it faces Midwestern State.

The Javelinas finished the regular season with an 8-18 record and a 3-11 mark in the Lone Star Conference to receive the seventh seed in this week's tournament. Midwestern State tied for the regular-season LSC crown with Tarleton State at 12-2 in the LSC and earned the second seed via tiebreaker. The Mustangs finished 20-6 overall with a nine-game losing streak.

Kingsville heads into the tournament with question marks as leading scorer Rashad Basey and fellow senior Dwight Taylor have missed multiple games and are day-to-day. Basey finished second in the LSC with 16.5 points a game in all games and 13.5 in 10 conference appearances. Ronald Scott is second on the team at 11.0 points a game and in the top 10 with 98 assists.

Midwestern State is led by Monzaigo Williams, who was selected first-team All-Lone Star Conference, and Xavier Blackburn – a second-team selection. Blackburn was also named to the all-defensive team. Williams was fifth in the LSC in scoring with 16.2 points and in assists with 4.4. Blackburn averaged just over 11 points and was third with 7.6 rebounds.

The meeting will mark the third time the sides have met this season. MSU won 83-62 in Wichita Falls and 83-60 in Kingsville two weeks ago. Blackburn led all players by averaging 18 points in the two games as Midwestern hit 49.6% a game. Jordan Jahr and Basey averaged 12 a game for Kingsville. Jahr had 20 points at Wichita Falls.
