Softball Rallies For Game 1 Win, Falls in Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader to win 6-5 in eight innings before falling 9-4 in the nightcap to Texas A&M International on StrikeOut Cancer Night sponsored by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg at Hubert Field.

In the opening game, the Javelinas (8-25) trailed the Dustdevils (13-18) 5-0 entering the bottom of the seventh before rallying to tie the game. It was the second-straight game the Javelinas won in their final at bat over International.

Myrissa Sanchez tripled to start the inning and with back-to-back outs was about to be stranded. Sanchez scored as Cortnee White reached on an error. After Bailey Offill walked, Jaeleen Castro singled down the line in right field to plate White. A 3-run home run by Valerie Ramirez, which was her third long ball of the season, pulled the Hoggies even at five.

The Javelinas won the game in the bottom of the eighth. With Adela Gomez at second to start the inning under international tiebreaker rules, Carynn Gonzales singled. Sanchez followed with a blooper over second base to knock in Gomez for the win.

After International scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the score remained 1-0 until TAMIU starter Kyndall Reaves belted a 3-run home run for a 4-0 lead in the fourth.

The Dustdevils extended their advantage to 5-0 as Samantha Gutierrez stole home as part of a double steal.

Carlie Clark pitched all eight innings to earn the win and move to 4-11. She allowed five runs with four earned with 10 strikeouts. She walked four batters. Reaves suffered the loss to fall to 5-7.

International opened game two with six runs in the top of the first and the Javelinas could not recover.

Trailing 7-1 heading into the sixth, Kingsville did score three runs to make it 7-4 but could get no closer.  Ramirez scored on a Dustdevil error, while Sanchez and Taylor McGill added RBI singles.

Desiree Ramos, who finished 4-of-4 with four RBI, ended thoughts of another late comeback with a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning.

Ariel Kellogg suffered the loss falling to 3-11 on the season. Sara Johnson earned the win to move to 5-7.
McGill, Ramirez and Castro each had a pair of hits in the night cap.

The Javelinas remain at home to host Cameron in a 3-game Lone Star Conference series this weekend. Action begins Friday at 5 p.m. with a doubleheader and concludes on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.
