Box Score CANYON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team was shutout for the first time this season as the Javelinas fell 4-0 Colorado Mesa on Sunday morning in its final game at the Woodward WT Invitational.
The Javelinas finished the tournament 1-4 and sit at 5-9 overall on the season. The win was the first of the season for Colorado Mesa which is now 1-4 on the season.
The Mavericks got on the board in the first inning. With one away, Megan Brown singled and scored on a two-out double by Caitlin Pattee.
The Javelinas threatened in the top of the third but were unable to capitalize.
Myrissa Sanchez was hit by a pitch and stole second. She stayed at second on a single by
Erica Graham, but was forced out at third on a
Cortnee White grounder for the first out. With the top of the order coming to the plate with just one out,
Bailey Offill, who singled in the first to extend her hitting streak to 13 games, hit into a 5-3 double play to end the inning.
Colorado Mesa followed with two runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 3-0. With one away Madelyn Schulz and Makayla Kovac had back-to-back doubles with Schulz scoring. Jessica Severinsen followed with a triple for a 3-0 lead for the Mavericks.
Kingsville threatened again in the fourth. With one away,
Valerie Ramirez walked and
Adela Gomez was hit by a pitch by Jo Bolyard. Bolyard would get
Jaeleen Castro to hit into a fielder's choice and then induced a fly out to left by
Taylor McGill.
In the fifth, Mesa closed the scoring by tacking on an unearned run.
The Javelinas tried to rally in the seventh. Castro drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to second on a single up the middle from Sanchez. Pinch hitters
Lindsey May and Corrine Brassell struck out ending the game.
Ariel Kellogg suffered the loss as she allowed three earned runs in 2-1/3 innings of work on six hits, while striking out two.
Carlie Clark pitched 3-2/3 innings allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk.
Bolyard (1-0) earned the win tossing a complete game, 3-hit shutout.
The Javelinas travel to St. Edward's on Wednesday for a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
