Javelinas Drop Pair To Cardinals In San Antonio

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team travelled to San Antonio Wednesday night to face former Lone Star Conference rival Incarnate Word in a doubleheader and were swept 6-3 and 13-9.

In the first game of the doubleheader, freshman Carlie Clark was solid for 6-2/3 innings limiting the Cardinals to no runs on five hits. However, the Cardinals refused to go quietly as they rallied off Clark in the bottom of the seventh.

With two away, Alex Zepeda singled and went to second on Kellen Robles double. Kristin Hebert followed with a two-run double to finally breakthrough against Clark.

After the Javelinas intentionally walked Alex Alonzo, Courtney McCoy drew a walk to load the bases.

The Javelinas turned to Ariel Kellogg to face Whitney Waltrip. Kellogg had allowed just four runs and no home runs in her first 24 innings. Waltrip would win the battle and the game depositing a 0-1 pitch over the fence in center field.

Kingsville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Bailey Offill led off with a single. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Graham, Courtnee White reached on an error. Jaleen Castro drew a walk to load the bases. With two away, Adela Gomez doubled to right-center field.

Gomez scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-0.

Clark suffered the loss, while Kristin Hebert claimed the win in relief.

Taylor McGill led Kingsville with two hits in the opener as the Javelinas had five. UIW had nine hits with Zepeda tallying three and Robles two.

In the second game each time Kingsville seemed to get something going, the Cardinals had an answer en route to the 13-9 win.

After Valerie Ramirez doubled to drive in Offill in the top of the first, the Cardinals had four runs in the bottom of the first including a 2-run single by Brooke DuBois.

Kingsville scored single runs in the second and third innings to make the score 4-3 entering the bottom of the third. White drove in Graham with a single in the second, while Ramirez tallied an unearned run in the third.

In the bottom of the third, Incarnate Word tallied three runs to take a 7-3 lead. They had two hits in the inning and took advantage of three walks and a hit batter by the duo of Kellogg and Kat Tapley.

The Hoggies didn't stay down knotting the game in the top of the fourth with four runs. Ramirez started the scoring with a 3-run double driving in Castro, Offill and White. Ramirez tied the game at 7-7 when she raced home on a passed ball.

After regaining the lead in the fourth, UIW crossed the plate four times in the fifth taking a 12-7 lead.
Castro pulled Kingsville to within 12-9 with a 2-run single but they could get no closer.

Kingsville finished with nine hits. Graham led the way with three, while Ramirez and Castro each had two hits. Ramirez drove in four and Castro had two RBI. Kellogg suffered the loss falling to 3-2 on the year.

Waltrip led the hosts with three of their 13 hits, while Alonzo had two. Mia Esposito, DuBois, McCoy and Waltrip each knocked in a pair of runs.

The Javelinas head to West Texas for a tournament beginning on Friday.
