Javelina Tennis Nets First Win Of 2013


KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s tennis team picked up its first dual-match win of the season on Friday downing Schreiner 5-4.
The Javelinas (1-1) opened play by taking 2-of-3 matches in doubles’ action. The No.-1 duo of Marija Dimitrovska and Maria Herrera opened with an 8-4 win over Leanna Haynes and Shelby Thompson. Kingsville’s No.-2 doubles’ unit of Victoria Rios and Tabata Lua Cervantes followed suit with an 8-4 win over Karyn Swink and Kelley Spahn.
The Mountaineers won at No.-3 doubles to avoid the sweep in pairs. Teresa Gaitan and Brooke Ohlman won 8-1 over Ashton Garcia and Alexandra Carrillo.
Wins at the top three spots in singles sealed the win for Kingsville. Herrerra won 6-1, 6-0 over Haynes in the top flight. Dimitrovska followed suit at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Thompson. Cervantes won at No. 3 over Gaitan by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
The longest match of the day was between Rios and Swink. Swink won the first 6-0, but Rios rebounded to even the match in the second set with a 6-4 victory. Swink sealed the 3-set win with a 10-4 win in the tie-breaking set.
Spahn and Madeline Scotch won for SU at No. 5 and No. 6. Spahn downed Garcia in a 6-3, 6-3 battle. Scotch defeated Carillo 6-3, 6-1.
The Javelinas continue a busy weekend on Saturday hosting Tarleton State in a Lone Star Conference match at 10 a.m. The match has been moved from A&M-Kingsville campus to the Bishop High School tennis courts.
