Javelina Men Fall To UTPB In Home Opener

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – After four games on the road to start the season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team finally made its debut on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court on Friday the first round of the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Classic falling to UTPB 106-89.

The Javelinas (2-3) hit 10 three-point baskets and connected on over 80 percent (21-of-26) from the foul line but could not overcome a pair of double-double performances by UTPB's Dwayne Soders and Keith Martin. Soders had 30 points and 10 boards, while Martin had 19 and 14.

The game was tight early as Kingsville's Ronald Scott hit a three to knot the game at 14 at the 15:01 mark.

However, the Falcons responded with an 18-4 run over the next 4-1/2 minutes. Soders, who had 30 points and was 16-of-20 from the foul line, started the run with a pair of foul shots. Andre Reider and Madison Turner followed with back-to-back 3-point basket. Phadarius Taylor added the final points with a pair of lay-ins.

Kingsville could get not closer than 11 points the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, UTPB extended its lead to as many as 31 points with 11:31 left at 78-47.

Behind junior guards Ta'Quan McDew and Ronald Scott, who each had 24 points, Kingsville made a late charge. They pulled to within 14 on basket by Scott with 3:06 remaining.

The Javelinas had opportunities to pull even closer but missed three treys in a row.

Kingsville was hampered by foul trouble as Rashad Basey, who had 12 points, and Adonis Bailey each fouled out. The Hoggies, who were called for 29 fouls to 20 for the Falcons, attempted five foul shots fewer than the Falcons stripe attempted. UTPB was 31-of-43 at the line.

UTPB finished with 45 rebounds led by Martin with 14 and Soders 10. Kingsville had just 21 total rebounds. Five Falcons had double figures including Thomas Feeney with 24.

The Javelinas will face Texas A&M International at 5 p.m. on Saturday, while UTPB will take on Cameron at 2:30 p.m. International beat Cameron 90-71 in Friday's opening game of the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Classic.
