Javelinas Hand TWU First LSC Defeat, Snap Losing Streak With Pioneers

Box Score DENTON, Texas – Three Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball players combined for 40 kills and the Javelinas handed Texas Woman's a 3-2 (17-25, 25-14, 25-16, 18-25, 15-13) loss at Kitty Magee Arena on Friday night.
Kelsey Washington led the way for Kingsville with 14 kills, while teammates Stephanie Johns and Dedra Brown each had 13. Washington had 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Johns added four total blocks – 1 solo and six block assists.
With the win, the Javelinas climb to 9-8 overall and are 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference. The win was the first by the Javelinas since 2002 over TWU. Kingsville had lost 11 straight. For the Pioneers, they drop to 3-1 in the LSC and are 11-5 overall.
In the decisive fifth set, the Hoggies hit .300 with nine kills in 20 attacks. Meanwhile, TWU hit just .190. The two sides were tied seven times in the final game with the Javelinas trailing only once at 1-0.
Kingsville took a 7-4 lead in the final set with three straight points breaking a 4-4 tie. Brown broke the tie with one of her three kills in the set, and Sarah Fountain added a second before a hitting error by TWU made it 7-4.
The Hoggies could not shake the hosts as Chloe' Tate tied the game at 10. The teams would be deadlocked again at 11 and 13. Kingsville sealed the win with a kill by Brown and an ace by Mariah Carlin.
Kingsville fell behind 1-0 as it struggled offensively hitting .065. TWU led throughout the opening set.
In the second and third sets, the Javelinas turned around the offense hitting .211. They limited the Pioneers to -.026 jumping out to a 14-4 lead after an ace by Sarah Fountain and kill by Brown. TWU could get no closer than 25-14.
The Javelinas took a 2-1 advantage in set three. They scored the first four points the last on a kill by Shae Smith and never trailed. Texas Woman's could not get closer than 5-3 the remainder of the set.
The fourth set was tight early on. The Javelinas trailed by two at 11-9 after a kill by Washington. The Pioneers would take control with five straight points to lead 16-9 and Kingsville would get no closer than five points at 18-13.
Aside from the trio of Brown, Washington and Johns, Kayla McGlathery had nine kills and Smith added a career-best six. Brittany Gutierrez led all players with a match and career-high 31 kills. Giselle Carreon had a team-best 26 assists, while added 23.
For TWU, Tate led the way with 15 kills, while Mallory Kuechle added nine. Morgan Wilson led four players in double-digit digs with 16. Kimberly Bell had 35 assists and 14 digs.
