Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Four Texas A&M-Kingsville players finished with at least 13 kills but it wasn't enough for the Javelina volleyball team to finish off St. Mary's Tuesday night as they fell 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10).
With their first lost loss of 2013 in a 5-set match, the Javelinas fall to .500 on the season at 11-11. St. Mary's improves to 9-10.
In the opening set, the Javelinas worked its way back from a 21-16 deficit to claim the first. Kingsville went on a 6-1 match to knot the set at 22.
Dedra Brown and
Kelsey Washington each had two kills in the run. A block by
Stephanie Johns and Washington tied the set. Back-to-back block solos by
Kalani Giddens pushed Kingsville into the lead before
Mariah Carlin's ace sealed the set 25-22.After
Kayla McGlathery's kill broke a tie at eight, the Javelinas controlled the second set leading by as many as six points on multiple occasions. McGlathery, who had a career-high 15 kills in the match, had five kills in the second set as the Javelinas hit .231.
After the Rattlers regrouped in set three leading the whole way to pull within a set with 25-19 win, the hosts tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-20 win. Kingsville led by as many as five points as late as 19-14 on a
Dedra Brown kill. However, after Jenna Paul had a kill for St. Mary's, the Hoggies committed five straight attack errors allowing the Rattlers to take a 21-19 lead.
In the decisive fifth set, Kingsville took an early 4-1 lead. The Rattlers responded with a 5-0 run to lead 6-4 with the last on a Megan Isbell kill. McGlathery's kill made it 6-5.
A pair of errors by the Hoggies helped put them in a 9-6 hole. McGlathery responded with her 15
th kill of the match to it 10-8, but the Javelinas could not get any closer. Kingsville struggled offensively hitting negative .033 in the set.
Aside from McGlathery's 15 kills, Washington and Johns each had 14, while Brown added 13. Four Javelinas also had double-digit digs.
Brittany Gutierrez led the way with 23, while Washington added 20 for her 10
th double-double. Carlin added 17 digs.
Sarah Fountain had 17 digs to go with 55 assists.
Paul led the hosts with 16 kills, while Kelsey Huber had 11. Each added five blocks. Victorria Martinez had a match-high 24 digs.
The Javelinas return home to host St. Edward's at 1 p.m. this Saturday in a match sponsored by Big House Burgers.
