STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Jonathan Woodson showed off his big play ability with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 26-yard touchdown run and Anthony Johnson ran for over 100 yards for the second-straight game in a row as Texas A&M-Kingsville spoiled Tarleton State’s Homecoming 35-23 at Tarleton Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

Senior quarterbacks Nate Poppell and Bryan Ehrlich combined for three touchdown passes on 15-of-27 passing for 182 yards as the Javelinas moved to 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in Lone Star Conference play. Tarleton drops to 3-4 on the year and is 3-3 in the LSC.

After Vaughn Smith scored on a 6-yard run to open the scoring, Woodson streaked down the right sideline for a 28-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. It was his first score since the opening game, the first of the season by the Javelinas in the opening quarter and pushed him over 5,000 all-purpose yards in his career. Matt Stoll missed the point after for a 7-6 score.

Stoll gave the Javelinas their first lead with 9:10 remaining in the half with a 27-yard field goal.

The Texans regained the lead on their next possession taking advantage of multiple TAMUK penalties to move down the field. Aaron Doyle scored from the one with 4:59 left in the half. The kick by Blake Barnes made it 14-9.

Kingsville finished with 10 penalties for 80 yards.

Right before the half, Clyde Lee gave Kingsville the lead for good, 15-14. The wideout caught a 5-yard pass from Poppell for his first TD as a Javelina with 42 seconds left. This time the P.A.T. by Stoll was blocked.

Mark Savere, who had a pair of pickoffs, intercepted an Aaron Doyle pass with 37 seconds left in the half but Kingsville could not capitalize. Ehrlich tried to run the ball in from the four on second-and-goal but was stopped at the one as time expired.

After Barnes missed a field goal on the opening possession of the second half, Ehrlich hit Robert Armstrong across the back of the end zone from the 26. Stoll’s kick was good for a 22-14 lead.

Shane Prater, who returned just last week from injury, got in the scoring act after a Tarleton punt. Prater hauled in a 51-yard strike down the right sideline and slipped into the front corner of the end zone. It was Prater’s first catch of the season. The point after failed as Kingsville took a 28-14 lead with 7:34 remaining in the third.

Tarleton cut its 14-point deficit in half less than two minutes later. Back-up quarterback Jake Fenske hit Arthur Buckingham for an 11-yard score as he was uncovered in the end zone.

Woodson sealed the win on the ensuing kickoff. The all-time leader with over 2,200 yards in kick returns entering the game, He returned the kick 93 yards for a score with 5:22 left in the third quarter for a 35-21 lead. It was his first kick return for a touchdown and the first by a Javelina since 2008.

Neither team threatened in the final quarter.

Angel Millan tied a school record with an 87-yard punt late in the third quarter.

Kingsville was outgained in the contest 439 to 365 in the contest but forced four turnovers – including three interceptions – but did not turn over the ball. Johnson finished with a career-high 135 yards on 21 carries helping the Javelinas win the time of possession battle 32:27 to 27:33.

Anthony Forker had a career-high 12 tackles, while Jeremy Aguilar had 10 with a forced fumble and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Steve Harris had a sack and an interception and Robert Williams had a sack.
