
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team snapped visiting Eastern New Mexico’s seven-game winning streak with a wire-to-wire, 77-69 win in the Lone Star Conference home opener at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Just a few days removed from a last second loss to St. Mary’s, the Javelinas (6-3, 1-0) responded with an outstanding performance. They outrebounded the Greyhounds (7-2, 0-1), a team with a +2.9 rebound margin entering the game, 41-20 and had 15 offensive rebounds. On defense, the Javelinas held to Greyhounds to 21 points under their season average and only four three-pointers after they came in averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game.
The Javelinas led by eight points at the half and led by as many as 17 points in the second half. The Greyhounds pulled to within six points with 3:37 remaining in the game, but a quick 6-0 run sealed the game for the team.
The Javelinas shot 47.5 percent from the field, made 6-of-15 three-pointers and were 15-for-21 from the foul line. The team had four players score in double figures and Ashton Brown (Randolph, NY/Central HS) led the team with 19 points and five assists. Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Reid Wallace (Spring/Tomball HS) had his best game of the season with 10 points and five rebounds while shooting 4-of-5 from the field.
The Javelinas had two players give the team a big lift off the bench. Marshall Bonds III (Little Rock, AR/Mills HS) scored 10 points and had seven rebounds in only 18 minutes of action. Freshman Raymond Robinson (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) added six points and four assists.
The Greyhounds shot 43.2 percent from the field, made 4-of-15 three-point attempts and were 27-of-37 from the foul line. Reggie Nelson led the team with 20 points and went 9-for-10 at the foul line. Greg McFarland came off the bench to score 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Devone Davis had seven points, seven steals and four assists.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. against LSC rival West Texas A&M. The game is sponsored by Neessen Chevrolet.
