Hogs Top Century Mark in Win

KINGSVILLE---The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team put on one of its best offensive shows in almost a decade as the Javelinas defeated St. Edward’s, 107-88, here Tuesday night in the Steinke Physical Education Center, knocking the Hilltoppers from the undefeated ranks.

The Javelinas, who hit 56 percent from the field, scored 66 points in the second half.

Five of the Javelinas hit double figures for the second game in a row, led by guard Ashton Brown’s 32.

Brown was seven of 12 from the field, three of six at the three-point stripe and 15 of 16 at the free-throw line. He hit 15 free throws in a row before missing on his final attempt.

Robert Williams had 22 points, Derryl Nash and Marshall Bonds 14 each and Marcus Ford 13.

Williams led the Javelinas, and game, in rebounds with nine and Nash pulled down eight.

The Javelinas led by as many as 11 in the first half, the biggest bulge coming at 37-26 with 3:22 left in the period.  TAMUK was in front, 41-34, at halftime.

The Javelinas built their lead back up to 11 at 65-54 with 11:41 remaining but the Hilltoppers rallied twice to pull within one. The last was 71-70 with 8:09 on the clock.

Before the Toppers scored again, the Javelinas were in front by nine and built to the lead the remainder of the game.

It was the most points scored by the Javelinas since they defeated Houston Baptist, 118-110 in overtime in 2002-03. It was the first time the Javelinas have hit the century mark since 2006-07 when they downed Huston-Tillotson, 103-62.

The Javelinas improved to 5-2 for the season while St. Edward’s fell for the first time and is now 3-1. One of the Hilltopper victories had been a 75-71 decision over the Javelinas earlier in Austin.

The Javelinas don’t return to action until next Monday night when they host St. Mary’s.
