Hogs Clean Up Dustdevils

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team shut down visiting Texas A&M-International in a 62-47 win at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Javelinas (2-1) never trailed in the game and scored 29 points off of 25 Dustdevil (1-2) turnovers. They took a 30-18 lead into halftime and then opened the second half on a 15-2 run to put the game away. They led by as many as 26 points and TAMIU did not get to within 20 points of the Hoggies until two minutes remained in the game.

The first half started slowly for both teams and the Javelinas only led 10-6 after 10 minutes of play, but then the Hogs received a spark off the bench from Sulaiman Sekamwa (Van Nuys, CA/Glendale CC). He scored seven points in the first half and finished the game with a team high 14 points in only 15 minutes of action. He went 4-for-5 from the field, 6-for-7 at the foul line and added two rebounds and two steals.

The Javelinas shot 36.5 percent from the field, were 3-for-16 from three-point range and connected on 21-of-29 free throw attempts. In addition to Sekamwa, Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) and Ashton Brown (Randolph, NY/Central HS) each scored 10 points. Ford added six boards, four assists, three blocks and two steals while Brown had two steals and went 7-for-7 at the foul line. Robert Williams (Dallas/Kimball HS) added nine points and six boards. The Hogs had 36 rebounds, dished out 12 assists and had 13 steals while committing 17 turnovers.

The Dustdevils shot 37.5 percent from the field, made 1-of-14 three-point attempts and went 10-of-15 from the foul line. Evan Matteson led the team with 10 points, five boards and two blocks. Ryan McLucas added six points, seven boards and four steals. Brian Schaefer came off the bench to contribute eight points and five rebounds. TAMIU had 33 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals while turning it over 25 times.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at home against Texas Lutheran.
