Javelinas Keep Rolling on the Road

ADA, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team had a fantastic start to the season winning their first six matches, but then tough times hit and the team saw its record fall to 9-9.  On Saturday, the Javelinas picked up their fifth straight win as they topped Lone Star Conference rival East Central in five sets 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 25-19, 15-13 to improve to 14-9 and 4-4 in conference play.  (Box score)

The Javelinas were fairly consistent on the attack throughout the match as the posted between .135 and .217 attack percentages for each set and finished with 50 kills and a .176 attack.  The Tigers (13-14, 4-3) were either very good or very bad and the inconsistency led to their loss.  They attacked at below a .100 percentage in each of the sets they lost and were above .214 in the two sets they won.  They had 60 kills, but 30 were in the two sets they won.

One of the keys for the Javelinas in their recent winning streak has been their ability to control the net.  They are averaging 10.5 blocks per match over the last four matches after having more than seven blocks in a match just once in the first 19 matches of the year.

The Javelinas were led offensively by junior Sha Tramble (Houston/Clear Brook HS) who had 15 kills, eight digs, three blocks and a.314 attack.  She also had the match-winning kill in the fifth set.  Seniors Adina Gray (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) and Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) each had 10 kills and five blocks.  Chancellor also led the team with a .381 attack.  Sophomore Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) added eight kills and a team high six blocks.

Senior Tara Grier (Poth/Poth HS) posted another double-double for the Hoggies with 22 assists and 11 digs.  Senior Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) contributed 15 assists and eight digs while junior Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) added 15 digs.

The Tigers were led by setter Holly Hicks.  She led the team with 18 kills, a .405 attack, 24 assists and six digs.  Jacqueline Sparks added 14 kills and 10 digs while Shayla May had 25 assists, nine kills and seven digs.  Megan Kimak led the team with 16 digs.

The Javelinas travel to non-conference foe Texas A&M-International for a match on Tuesday at 7 o’clock.
