San Angelo – Trey Weishuhn threw four touchdown passes as the Angelo State Rams (3-7, 2-4) beat the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas (3-8, 0-6) 38-20 in the final game of the season for both teams.
It was also the last game for Javelina head coach Richard Cundiff who saw his seven-year tenure as head coach end.
The Javelina offense actually out-gained the Rams 400 yards to 345 and held ASU to just 14 first downs and without a successful third down conversion, but Texas A&M-Kingsville turned the ball over four times, three times on the Ram side of the field.
Junior running back Raymorris Miller had over 100 yards early in the third quarter and finished with a season-high 131 yards on 27 carries. It marked the second consecutive game that Miller had over 100 yards on the ground, the third time this season he surpassed 100 yards and the seventh 100-yard game of his career.
Freshman quarterback Jeremy Heatley completed 20 of 29 passes for 236 yards and two scores.
Senior wide receiver Steve Yaden had eight catches for a season-high 101 yards and a 54-yard score.
Junior receiver Jareko Taylor caught five passes for 97 yards, including an 80-yard scoring pass, and tied the Javelina single-season record for most pass receptions in a season with 54.
Taylor accomplished that feat in only nine games and tied the record held by Eldridge Small set in 1969.
Weishuhn finished 9-of-17 for 193 yards, Matt McCarty caught six passes for 126 yards, and Daniel Thomas ran the ball 15 times for 88 yards and a score to lead Angelo State.
The Javelinas drove the ball into Ram territory five of the first nine times it had the ball, but came away from only six points.
Weishuhn’s fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 28-yarder to Louis Hayes gave the Rams a 35-6 lead with 6:34 left in the game.
Heatley threw his two scoring passes to Yaden and Taylor in the final six minutes of play.
The Javelinas held the ball for nearly 21 of the 30 minutes in the first half, but trailed 28-6.
Texas A&M-Kingsville turned the ball over twice, both leading to Angelo State touchdowns while two deep drives into Ram territory yielded only two field goals.
The Javelina running game was effective in the first half, compiling 106 yards.
Raymorris Miller had 79 yards on 14 carries to lead the way.
But the Javelina’s two big drives stalled on the Ram three and 19-yard lines.
Freshman kicker Scott Schlebach responded with field goals of 20 and 36 yards.
Schlebach has now made all 11 field goals attempts of 40 yards or less on the season.
ASU wasted little time in taking the lead, taking just two plays to drive 52 yards on their first possession to lead 7-0 just over two minutes into the game.
ASU’s second drive was also lightning quick, covering 68 yards in five plays to grab a 14-3 lead.
With less than five minutes left in the half, after the Javelinas cut the Ram lead to 14-6, quarterback Jeremy Heatley was sacked, fumbled the ball and Angelo State returned it all the way to the Javelina one-yard line. Two plays later the Rams scored to make it 21-6.
The Javelinas looked to be putting together an effective drive late in the half when Heatley was intercepted deep in Ram territory and it was returned back to the Javelina 27-yard line with minute left in the half.
Three plays later the Rams scored their fourth touchdown of the half with 22 seconds remaining to grab a 28-6 advantage.
ASU out-gained the Javelinas by only 17 yards in the first half, 174-157.
