The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas won their second consecutive match and third in the last five matches, sweeping Angelo State 30-23. 30-17. 30-24.
It was the first sweep of the season for the Javelinas and it improved their record to 6-17 overall and 2-4 in the LSC South Division.
Angelo State drops to 3-18 and 1-5.
Freshman Chelsea Zunker (New Braunfels Canyon) and senior Danielle Godfrey (Houston Crosby) combined for 20 of the team’s 49 kills and each hit over .430 for the match.
Freshman Adina Gray (Corpus Christi Flour Bluff) and junior Heidi Scheopner (Harlingen South) each added eight kills.
Freshman Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels Canyon) led the Javelinas with 24 digs while freshman Tara Grier (Poth HS) had a team-high 17 digs.
A trio of Javelinas, Godfrey, Zunker and freshman Kristen Chancellor (Bellville), had three block assists apiece.
The Javelinas hit .254 as a team while the Rambelles hit just .078.
“It was nice to get a sweep,” said Javelina head coach Jane Kieschnick. “Danielle and Chelsea really did a great job at the net tonight. I think our chemistry has really improved the last few weeks and it shows.”
The Javelinas got off to solid leads in each of the first two games, leading 4-1 in game one and 7-3 in game two.
Texas A&M-Kingsville never trailed in game one after grabbing a 14-13 lead and after the first point of the match, never trailed in game two.
In game three, Angelo State came out and grabbed an early 8-6 lead, but the Javelinas took the lead for good at 11-10 and scored the final five points of the match.
Texas A&M-Kingsville will host Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Center at 2:00 p.m.
