Canyon - Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams rounded out day one of the meet with three podium finishes at the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships. The Javelinas also had four athletes qualify for finals this Saturday.
The first Javelina to podium in the championships was junior women's pole vaulter
Kenzie Kurdys, who earned the gold in the event. She cleared a height of 3.63m in the outdoor vault earning her second LSC Champion performance in pole vault this year, following up her first LSC Champ finish during the indoor season
The Javelinas weren't done there, though. Senior
Django Segovia and redshirt freshman Gage Upton would podium as well. Segovia would bring home the bronze medal, clearing a height of 4.98m making it his second appearance on a podium this year. Bringing home the silver yet again this year, Upton would clear 5.18m putting another medal under his belt.
Four athletes qualified in the prelims of their respective events, giving the team a few extra chances in receiving points Saturday. Sophomore
Roberto Alejandro and freshman
Leon Doran qualified for the 1500m race to compete Saturday in the finals. Alejandro had the 6th best qualifying time, running a 4:00.73, nearly two seconds better than the man behind him. Doran had the 11th best qualifying time of 4:04.30, nearly a full second ahead of the 12th and final qualifying time.
Oneika Brissett would qualify as well in the 200m dash, winning her heat and earning an automatic bid into the finals. Brissett ran a scorching time of 23.77 becoming the new 21st best time in Division II. Also qualifying for the 200m dash on the men's side was
Ausencio Martinez. The freshman ran the third best qualifying time of 21.02 for a spot to compete in the finals Saturday.
The LSC Outdoor Championships continue Friday and Saturday. The Javelina Men's team sit in 3rd place currently with 24 points, just four points away from Angelo State who sit in 2nd. Meanwhile, the Javelina Women's team sit in 7th place with 13 points, just one point away from UT-Tyler who sit in 6th place.
