Kingsville — Texas A&M-Kingsville swept the doubleheader against West Texas A&M on Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field, taking Game 1 by a 5-1 final before rallying for a 9-4 victory in Game 2 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead.
The Javelinas (25-24, 25-24 LSC) were locked in all afternoon, outscoring the Buffs 14-5 on the day to bring their three-game series total to 17-7. Getting a complete game gem in the opener and a clutch two-out rally in the nightcap, TAMUK sent the home crowd home happy.
Game 1:
Zachary Wright was untouchable from start to finish, going all seven innings and allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five to earn his fourth win of the season and improve to 4-4.
TAMUK jumped on the Buffs early, as Cash Benavidez launched a two-run home run to left field in the first inning to score Cade Minus and put the Javelinas in front 2-1. The Javelinas then put it away in the fourth with a three-run inning, as Javier Benavides roped a two-run triple down the right field line to score Benavidez and Easton Hewitt before Jake Gann followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 5-1. Wright took care of the rest, completing the victory with ease.
Benavides finished 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the offense, while Benavidez added a home run and two RBI of his own.
Game 2:
The nightcap was a tale of two halves. West Texas A&M jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a big third inning, but the Javelinas answered with six two-out runs in the fifth to flip the game on its head and never looked back.
With two outs in the fifth, Damian Carreon scored on a wild pitch to get TAMUK on the board before Cian Garza scored on a throwing error to make it 4-2. Fisher Davis then singled to short to plate Garza and cut the deficit to one before Easton Hewitt put the Javelinas ahead for good with his first home run of the season, a three-run blast to deep left field, to make it 6-4. The Javelinas kept the two-out magic going in the sixth, as Travis Vlasek reached on a throwing error to score Derek Martinez and Hewitt followed with an RBI single through the right side to push the final margin to 9-4.
Hewitt was the offensive star of the nightcap, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI and a home run. Davis went 2-for-4 with an RBI as well. On the mound, Niko Garcia earned his first career win, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings to improve to 1-0.
