Kingsville - Junior thrower
Yosiris Cordoba broke her own school record, and set the new best throw in the nation this year, in the discus with a 53.57m throw as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's and men's track teams set seven new top-10 marks in school history and five new top-20 marks in the nation across Friday and Saturday's competition at the 2026 Cactus Cup.
Another one of the Kingsville women's throwers joined Cordoba with a stellar throw on Saturday. Continuing a breakout junior season,
Karina Alvarez went for 14.68m in the shot put, which is now only the new second-best throw in school history, and the 12th-best throw in the nation so far this year. Not far behind her, junior
Kaylea Demetrius threw 14.905m, placing her fifth in the event and jumping her up to eighth in school history. Freshman thrower
Hailey Martinez got into the mix as well, throwing 48.30m in the hammer throw, the new ninth-best toss in the program's history.
Senior high jumper
Nicola Swenson, who was honored just after her event as one of the team's eight graduating seniors, posted a new PR of 1.68m, jumping her back up in the national standard, slotting her in at 20th.
On the men's side, sophomore
Roberto Alejandro had another great weekend, running a 3:58.04 in the 1500m, which both won the event and slid him up to seventh in school history. Another Kingsville underclassman stacking stellar weekends, freshman
Christopher Gonzalez, won the men's 400m hurdles with a 52.61, which is both the tenth best time run in school history and the 16th-fastest run in the nation so far this season. Not only that, but his 7.51m long jump won the event and is the new 12th-best jump in the nation this season. Another underclassman with a great horizontal jump, sophomore
Dorian Aranda, jumped onto the school's recordbook with a 14.75m triple jump, the new 10th-best jump in school history.
The Javelinas will be back out onto the oval next weekend as they will be splitting their teams up to travel to both Houston for the Tom Tellez Invitational and California for Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational.
