Javelinas split double-header Friday with Eagles

Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville split its double-header Friday with Oklahoma Christian, 4-3 and 4-18, at Nolan Ryan Field.

The Javelinas (14-7, 14-7 LSC) got another close win over the Eagles (7-14, 7-14 LSC) in the first game of the contest after scoring three runs in the first before dropping the second game by way of the largest deficit this season. The Javelinas will now look to earn the series win on get-away Saturday.

Game 1:
Texas A&M-Kingsville started off hot in game one, plating three runs in the first inning with four hits, a walk and a fielding error by Oklahoma Christian. Joshua Prado, Nick Reyes and Nathan Gamez all notched RBIs in that inning as the Javelinas took a 3-1 lead.

Neither team would plate a run for the next three innings as the Javelinas got great pitching from true-freshman Zachary Wright, who allowed four shut-out innings to go with a career-high five strikeouts to keep the Javelinas' lead alive. Gamez then broke the dry spell with another RBI in the fifth to make it a 4-1 ball game.

That run by the Javelinas proved to be a crucial one, as Oklahoma Christian would plate a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-3 ball game. The Javelinas got nothing going their next time up to bat as they called on Tyler Schumann to finish the game. Schumann would strike out the first two batters before getting the Eagle batter to pop one into the infield for the final out of the contest.

Game 2:
Game two simply did not go the way of the Javelinas from jump. Oklahoma Christian jumped on the Javelinas early and never relinquished their lead, building a 5-0 advantage through the first two innings. Javier Benavides and Isaiah Aguilar were brought home to make it a 5-2 ball game, but the Eagles spotted six runs in the following frame as they cruised to their first win of the series.

A silver lining for the Javelinas was that a pair of Javelinas got some career-firsts for the Javelinas. Aidan Nance would get credited for his first career strikeout while Jake Gann notched his first career hit.

Texas A&M-Kingsville takes on Oklahoma Christian in the final game of the series Saturday at 1:00 pm. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on FloCollege or follow the action at JavelinaBSB on X.
