Portales, NM – Opening weekend is here for Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball, as it travels to Eastern New Mexico for a three-game series at Greyhound Baseball Stadium beginning on Friday.
After reaching the conference tournament last season with a 27-25 record, the Javelinas will looks to get the positive momentum going early as they travel to a Greyhound team that just barely missed out on the LSC tournament last season after dropping their final series of the season. Both teams are projected to finish near each other in the conference standing as well, slotting into the seventh and eighth spot in the LSC preseason poll respectively.
The Javelinas are looking for the young core that made up their roster last season takes a big step forward, as they only lost two starters from their lineup after the final game of last season. The core hitting unit of
Joshua Endo,
Nick Reyes,
Isaiah Aguilar and
Easton Hewitt all return for the Javelinas, with junior college transfers
Travis Vlasek and
Joshua Prado potentially filling necessary holes that opened up.
Where the Javelinas can be most excited for this season however is their battery, catcher
Jayden Martinez and right-handed pitcher
Tyler Schumann were both named preseason players-to-watch for the LSC and to the all-region team for the South-Central region by the National Baseball Writers Association. Martinez, a senior from Corpus Christi, hit .341 for with 14 RBI's across just 28 appearances. He also threw out 18 stolen base attempts with a 97.4-percent fielding percentage. Schumann posted a 5.63 ERA and 30 strikeouts across 30.2 innings of work and was named the LSC freshman of the year for the 2025 season.
Portales has been favorable grounds for the Fir in the past, posting a 28-18 record against the Greyhounds and winning two of the last three four-game series against Eastern New Mexico outright. Last year's opening-week series against the Greyhounds was a reversal of history however, as the Greyhounds took that four-game series from the Javelinas 3-1.
First pitch for the series in Greyhound Baseball Stadium is set for 3:00 pm CST. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game live on FloCollege or follow the action at JavelinaBSB on X.
