Kingsville - After coming up short in Saturday's rematch with Angelo State, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team hits the road for a Thursday, 6:00 p.m. CT meeting with Western New Mexico, continuing Lone Star Conference play.
After a strong start to the new year, the Javelinas are looking to get back in the win column as they head northwest for a matchup with the winless Mustangs. The turn of the calendar brought the first win of the team's season, which grew into a stretch that saw Kingsville win three of five games before losing a pair of contests against Angelo St. last week. Now the crew, which is led by a balanced attack of four different players who average 7.0-plus points per game, will look to right the ship as it makes the longest road trip of its conference schedule.
Thursday's competition will be the first of a two-segment weekend roadtrip which will see the team head south back into the Lone Star State for a matchup with Sul Ross St. at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.Â
Scouting the Competition: Western New Mexico Mustangs (LSC, 0-17, 0-11 LSC)
WNMU remains winless, still seeking a breakthrough after, most recently, a 46-73 loss to LSC-newcomer UT-Dallas.
A young team, much like the Javelinas, the Mustangs are led by a number of underclassmen, including freshman point guard Jordan Sapien, who leads the crew in scoring with 13.5 points per game, the 10th-most in the LSC, while shooting 43.2% from the field, the 14th-best mark in the conference. Not only that, but the first-year-collegiate player also leads them in assists with 3.4 (fourth in the LSC), and assist-to-turnover ratio with 1.7 (third in the LSC).Â
In conference play, the Mustangs have crushed the offensive glass, bringing down 12.1 extra opportunities per game, the seventh-most in the LSC. That will make for an intriguing matchup on the glass as they face off with the Javelinas' +3.6 rebound margin (fifth-best in the conference).
Javelina Quick Hitters
- Sophomore guard Addisyn Parker led a strong Kingsville rebounding performance earlier in the week with 13 rebounds at Angelo State (Jan. 21), finishing two points shy of a double-double
- Freshman guard Jadeyn Parez has been impactful in her early starts, highlighted by 18 points vs. Angelo State on Jan 24; She is shooting 49% FG (second on team) and 46% 3PT (leads team) on the season
- TAMUK has been excellent on the boards so far this year, ranking fifth in the LSC with +3.6 per game in rebound margin (35.8-32.1); the Javelinas limited opponents to 31.2 rebounds per gameÂ
- Kingsville's offense has improved as the year has gone along, now averaging 12.75 assists per game; Groves (2.69 apg) and Parker (2.75 apg) pace the team's distribution.
- Sophomore forward Thalia Daniels has had a strong start to her career in the blue and gold, leading the team on the glass at 6.2 rebounds per game (with 7.8 ppg).
- While she leads a team effort on the glass, the Javelinas' success on the boards has been a group project - six different Javelinas average 3.0+ rebounds per game this season.
- Head Coach Micheal Madrid is in his seventh season at the helm for the Javelinas; program bio pages and releases list him as the second-winningest head coach in program history
- Madrid and the Javelinas are looking to return to the LSC Tournament, aiming for back-to-back appearances after last season's run.
