Javelinas clobber Sul Ross, get first conference win

Box Score Alpine, Texas - Texas A&M-Kingsville got back on track after the clobbered Sul Ross State, 52-3, Saturday at Jackson Field.

The Javelinas (2-2, 1-1 LSC) had their largest margin of victory over an opponent since 2022, it was the largest conference margin of victory since the Javelinas beat UTPB 56-7 in the 2016 season. Saturday's contest was the first time since 1975 that the Javelinas traveled to the Lobos (0-4, 0-2 LSC) and just the third time the two teams have played each other since then.

Texas A&M-Kingsville was efficient on the ground today, rushing for five touchdowns. The last time a Javelina team scored five times on the ground was the season opener in 2022 against North American where they rushed for six touchdowns. Four different ball carriers scored a TD for the Hogs, including Andre Branch, Raymond Hudson III, James Chumley and tight end Kenhide Atunrase.

Quarterback Jack Turner was also effective against the Lobos, tossing two second half touchdowns that salted the game away in the Javelinas' favor. Turner first connected with Branch who would scamper into the endzone after leaking out of the backfield. Then Turner found Christian Kretz down the seam for his second touchdown of the season, that score made it 45-3 in favor of the Javelinas as the depth chart got some playing time in the home stretch.

The defense also made some plays for the Javelinas, Blake Jaques and Doug Brooks each recorded a sack and Ashton Williams snagged his first interception in his Javelina career. It was a nice bounce-back performance for the Javelina defense, who had struggled the previous two games.

Texas A&M-Kingsville returns to road action next week as it takes on Midwestern State University. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on FloCollege or follow the game at JavelinaFB on X.
