SAN ANTONIO - Both the men's and women's cross country teams faced elite competition from across Texas at the UIW XC Invitational in San Antonio, TX on Friday.

The men secured 10th place out of the 13 team field with 252 points and a top-five average time of 21:17. Meanwhile, the women turned in a strong 6th place performance among 12 universities, finishing with 199 points and a top-five average of 20:08. 

"We had many PBs on the course today," Assistant Coach Zachary Hall said. "Both teams were buried after the first 800. With the narrow course and the tight turns I say we looked pretty good of the second half of the race."

Sophomore Alan Baez paced the men's squad with a 43rd place finish in 21:01. The Javelinas packed well behind their leader, with Joey Barrera (21:10, 54th), Roberto Alejandro (21:10, 66th), Joshua Perez (21:26, 70th), and Abner Villanueva (21:30, 75th) all crossing within 30 seconds of each other.

The women were led by senior Ivanova Yanes who captured a 17th place finish with a time of 18:37. Junior Ella Hester (19:59, 53rd) and freshman Kayla Trevino-Garcia (20:04, 54th) provided solid support just five seconds apart. Yaritzy Acosta rounded out the scoring five with a 63rd-place showing in 20:27. Also competing for the Javelinas were Samantha Presas (21:22, 92nd), Beyonce Hernandez (21:48, 94th), Zailey Zimmerman (22:02, 99th), and Audrey Cubria (23:25, 113th).

"We add our top men at our next race when we go to Louisville, I think we can look pretty dangerous," Hall said.

Both squads now turn their attention to the 24th Annual Swags Louisville Cross Country Classic in Kentucky on October 4th.
