Canyon - Despite the 10-4 loss to West Texas A&M in the final game of the regular season, Texas A&M-Kingsville clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference tournament on Sunday.
The Javelinas (27-23. 26-22 LSC) clinched a postseason spot as the No. 7 seed after missing the tournament last season by way of Eastern New Mexico dropping their series to Texas A&M-International. However the Javelinas could not get a higher seed after dropping the final game of the regular season against the Buffaloes (31-19, 29-19 LSC).
Get-away day was not kind to the Javelinas up in Canyon, as West Texas notched a series-high 12 hits to get double-digit runs across for the first time this series. The Hogs got eight hits on the board with
Easton Hewitt,
Vincent Sanchez and
Javier Benavides all recording a double.Â
Despite the production, the Javelinas could not get enough runners across home plate as six runners were left stranded. The Buffaloes were able to take advantage of the lack of scoring by the Javelinas, plating the first run of the game in the third. Texas A&M-Kingsville responded quickly however, as Sanchez's double got Hewitt across the plate to keep it at a 1-1 game heading into the fourth.Â
Inning number four would be where things got away from the Javelinas, as West Texas A&M plated three runs across to retake the lead. A scoreless top of the fifth for the Javelinas led to another run getting on the board for the Buffaloes, and four runs from WT in the bottom of the seventh put the game out of reach. Cash Benavides did knock his first home run of the season in the ninth, but it was too little too late for the Javelinas.
Texas A&M-Kingsville will take on UT-Tyler in the first round of the LSC conference tournament on Friday. Fans of the Javelinas can watch live on FloCollege or follow the game at JavelinaBSB on Twitter.
