Canyon - Despite making it a one-run game late, the Texas A&M - Kingsville baseball team came up just short of West Texas A&M in game three of their series, losing 8-7.
Five different Javelinas posted multi-hit games as Kingsville wracked up 13 total hits as a team. The squad scored five in the final two innings, three in the eighth on a deep ball from
Elijia West, and two in the ninth, but WT's timely hitting proved too much.
While the Buff scored first, putting a run on the board in the top of the first, it didn't take long for the Pack to bounce back.
Jacob Cueva helped TAMUK put two different runs on the board in the bottom of the second. First, he shot one into right field, bringing
Nick Reyes home, then, he forced a play to be made at second that caught him stealing, allowing
Damian Carreon to come home.
Kingsville held on to that one-run lead until the fourth inning. WT scored three in the frame, beginning a run in which the team scored seven unanswered runs from the fourth through the seventh inning. As the Javelinas got down to their final six outs, however, the team came alive. With two aboard, West blasted one over the wall in left center, slicing the home team's lead in half. Then, in the final frame,
Jayden Martinez scored
Easton Hewitt with a shot down the right field line, cutting into the Javelinas' deficit even more. Back at the plate, West wasted no time, using the first pitch he saw to grab his fourth RBI of the day to make it a one-run game. That is where Kingsville's scoring ended, however, as the team came up just short of its second win of the series.
Daniel Cardona started on the mound and recorded his second loss of the season, pitching 3.2 and giving up five hits and four runs.
Tyler Schumann pitched 1.1 in relief, giving up four hits and two runs, before
Brian Buchanan closed the game, pitching the final 3.0 and giving up two hits and two runs.
The Javelinas will be back on the diamond at 1 p.m. tomorrow where they will look to tie the series and end their regular season with at win.
