Canyon - Texas A&M-Kingsville split its double-header Friday with West Texas A&M in the final regular season series on Friday.
The Javelinas (27-21, 26-20 LSC) got an important win in game one of the double-header, 11-4, before falling just short of the Buffaloes (28-20, 27-19 LSC) 6-5 in the second game. Texas A&M-Kingsville also got some help today, as Eastern New Mexico dropped the first game of their series against Texas A&M-International putting the Javelinas two games up on the Greyhounds for now.
The long ball powered the Javelinas to a win in game one, as
Elijia West and
Joshua Endo each hit one out of the park against the Buffaloes. West, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since game one against St. Mary's on March 14, hit his third home run of the season in the first inning and Endo hit his first home run of the season in the seventh.
Ulisses Quiroga was called to start for the Hogs to get the series started. The transfer from UTSA put up a quality showing against West Texas, going six innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just two runs to score.Â
Overall, it was another impressive offensive showing for the Javelinas who piled up 10 hits against WT.
Vincent Sanchez led the way with two singles and a double plus two RBI's,
Nick Reyes also added two RBI's with his double in the first inning.
Game two started well for the Javelinas, as three runs would come across the plate for the Hogs thanks to an RBI single from
Jeremy Cavazos and a two-RBI double from Endo. West Texas responded quickly however, plating five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the series.
Another run for the Buffaloes would get across the plate in the fourth inning, bolstering their lead to 6-3. Scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth put the Javelinas in familiar territory, down by three with just three out to tie it up. Cavazos got two in scoring position after a
Jacob Cueva walk with a ground-rule double, however the Hogs had to use two outs to get two runs across to make it a one-run game. Those outs would be crucial, as the Javelinas could not recapture their magic and fell in a close game two.
The Javelinas and Buffaloes return to nine-inning action tomorrow for game three of the final regular season series. Fans of the Javelinas can watch live on FloCollege or follow the game at Javelina BSB on Twitter.
