Hogs plate 20 runs in game two, split double-header against Hilltoppers

Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville plated a season-high 20 runs in game two of the double-header to split the day against No. 21 St. Edward's University on Friday.

The Javelinas (25-20, 24-19 LSC) scored the most runs in a game since Feb. 12, 2023 when it took down West Texas A&M, 24-20, in Cayon. Game three's 20-6 victory over the Hilltoppers (32-17, 31-16 LSC) was a great bounce back performance after the Javelinas were held off the scoreboard, 0-6, in game one.

Game one saw the Hogs get only four runners on base thanks to a pair of hits from Nick Reyes and Easton Hewitt. The Hilltoppers however combined for four hits and eight walks that plated six runs despite a season-high seven strikeouts from Gabriel LeBlanc.

Needing a big response from the bats, the Javelinas would get just that in the second game of the double-header. The Hogs started slow, only plating one run in the first two innings thanks to an RBI-double from Vincent Sanchez. They would eventually erupt in the third, scoring a preposterous 10 runs on seven hits and four walks to blow the game wide open.

SEU, desperate for a response, was shut down in the top of the fourth thanks to Ulises Quiroga. The Javelinas' ace pitcher struck out the side for three of his seven strikeouts on the day, increasing his total to a team-high 61 strikeouts.

The offense was not done clicking however, scoring four more runs in the fourth thanks to a  bases-clearing double from Sanchez plus a SAC-RBI from Jacob Cueva to balloon the lead to 15-1. The Hilltoppers got three back in the fifth, but the damage was already done as the Hogs were on cruise control in the closing innings.

The bottom of the sixth featured some firsts for the Javelinas on their way to 20 runs, Jeremy Cavazos got his first two base hits of the season with a single and a double plus and RBI. Cash Benavides got his first extra base hit and RBI of the season and Maurice Martinez had his first four-hit game to go with three RBI's.

Texas A&M-Kingsville celebrates senior day tomorrow and looks to win the series against the Hilltoppers at 1:00 pm. Fans of the Javelinas can watch live on FloCollege or follow the game at JavelinaBSB on Twitter.
