Softball looking to bounce back with matchup against No.22 Lubbock Christian

Kingsville - After losing a doubleheader with No.4 Angelo St. on the road, the Texas A&M - Kingsville softball team has another ranked matchup on the docket, a doubleheader showdown with the No.22 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Javelinas will be looking to add to a 6-4 record in Lone Star Conference play. They had rode a four-game winning streak, all of which were conference games, into Friday's matchup with the Rambelles.

"We look forward to playing Lubbock Christian, another great team in the Lone Star Conference," Head Coach Orlando Salinas said. "Our goal this weekend is to put all phases together, pitching, hitting, and defense, and we feel we're moving toward that goal every game. It's a long conference season and the goal is to peak at the right time and I feel we're moving toward our ultimate goal."

Lubbock has a 15-5 record, though three of those five losses have come to ranked teams, including a pair of losses to No.1 UT-Tyler. The Chaps are coming off of 10-0 (5) and 5-4 wins over Texas A&M - International on Friday.

Lubbock has had some of the best bats in the conference early in the year, holding the third-best team batting average in the LSC at .345. The team's on base percentage of .424 is the third in the conference as well. As the 22 in front of their name, the Chaps' pitching has been strong as well, as their staff ranks fifth in the conference in ERA and opposing batting average as well as fourth in strikeouts.

Though it has struggled in their last two games, the Javelinas' offense has been almost just as strong. Their .323 batting average and .411 on base percentage are each fifth-best in the LSC. They are led on that side of the ball by graduate student outfielder Lindsey Evans, whose .525 batting average leads the Lone Star. Her 32 total hits are the second-most and her 15 walks are the third-most of any hitter in the conference this season. Sophomore Laney Doelitsch's early-season numbers are also top 15 in the conference in both OBP and walks.

The team's pitching has come along in a big way as of late, led by freshman right hander Arianna Alaniz. Despite having just four starts to her name, Alaniz is fourth in the LSC in strikeouts with 62, just under two Ks per inning. Her .181 opposing batting average is the third-lowest of any pitcher in the conference.

This will be the final road series for Kingsville before a four game home stand next weekend with doubleheaders against West Texas and Midwestern on Friday and Sunday respectively.
