Women’s basketball eyes fifth straight win in Cameron

Kingsville - For the second time this year, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's basketball team is on a four-game win streak - the Javelinas will look to make it five when they face the Cameron Aggies in a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m..

The win streak has the Javelinas up to fifth in the Lone Star Conference and sitting at 14-8 overall with six games left in their regular season.

"Our focus is to get better every time we step on the floor and this weekend will be no different," Head Coach Michael Madrid said. "We will prepare for our upcoming game with Cameron with maturity. Our players understand the importance of going 1-0 each day."

Cameron enters the game coming off of a big win over TAMIU on Thursday. Not only was the win in and of itself a big one, with the Aggies dropping 80 points in a 27-point home win, but it also gave them some much-needed momentum heading into Saturday's game as it broke the team's 15 game losing streak. Despite that streak, Cameron has proved itself a dangerous foe, playing in a number of very close games, including a two-point loss to the Javelinas when these two teams faced off in Kingsville early this year. That last-minute win for TAMUK was the third win in its first four-game streak.

"Cameron is extremely talented and well coached," Madrid said. "They have a number of players that can shoot the three and score getting to the rim. They also have one of the best interior players in the conference. Just like in every game, our hope is to contest every shot and compete."

Forward Shamica Smith has indeed been one of the Lone Star's best post players all year. She averages the fifth-most points in the LSC (15.0) while also grabbing the third-most rebounds (9.3), and shooting the second-best percentage from the field (55.6%).

Smith isn't the only talented scorer on the Aggie roster, as they also have a number of solid three-point shooters, guard Grace Alverson not least among them. Alverson makes the fourth-most threes per game in the conference (2.4) while shooting the seventh-best percentage (31.2).

It's been the defensive side of the ball that's dominated as of late for the Javelinas, as they boast the 15th-best scoring defense in the nation. Their four game win streak has seen them hold opponents to 52 or fewer points and less than 40% shooting from the field in every contest. Senior point guard Abby Bala's offensive play has also been top-tier lately, as she's posted a new career high - one each in points, assists, and steals - in three of TAMUK's last four games. Despite that, Madrid still feels the team's offense can be playing better.

"We need to be better offensively," Madrid said. "I've thought our last couple of games we have been very sloppy offensively."

The game, which is the second of four straight road games for Kingsville, is set to tip off at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on FloCollege (linked on the schedule). Follow Javelinawbb on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for scores and updates.
