Softball heading to Canyon for WT Invitational

Kingsville - After knocking off a top-15 ranked team their first weekend of play, the Texas A&M - Kingsville softball team is headed west for the 2025 West Texas A&M Invitational, where they'll play five games across three days.

The team sits at 2-4 after playing six different teams - two of which were ranked in the top-15 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association D2 Preseason poll - over three days at the Mardi Gras Invite in Louisiana. The weekend ended on a high note when Kingsville took down No.12 Mississippi College 8-7 with a late walk-off single from Savannah Garza to score AJ Jasso - who had two homers and a double in the win.

"Coming back from this past weekend's tournament, we're coming back really anxious and looking forward to this upcoming weekend," Head Coach Orlando Salinas said. "We had some young players that got great experience this past weekend and our pitching staff really stepped up. We could easily have come back 5-1. We're excited for this upcoming weekend."

Now the Javelinas will play three different teams -  Colorado at Colorado Spring, Moorhead, and Lincoln (Mo.) - in Canyon in their final matchups before Lone Star Conference play begins.

TAMUK's weekend starts at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, when the team faces off with UCCS. The Mountain Lions are off to a 3-1 start that saw the team post 27 runs through its first two games. Not a single one of its games have gone seven innings so far, with two that went an extra inning before the Mountain Lions grabbed a win, and two that finished in just five innings - one where UCCS mercied a Sul Ross St. in its season opener and one where they were mercied by No.13 West Texas A&M.

Friday's night cap is a 6 p.m. matchup between Kingsville and Moorhead for the team's second game of the season. The Dragons' are 4-2 after a trip to North Dakota for the Bubble Invite. They ended their weekend with three straight wins across which they gave up just three runs. The team's senior pitcher, Avery Steffen, is 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA to start the year.

After the late game on Friday, the Javelinas have the early game on Saturday, with a 9 a.m. matchup. The Blue Tigers from Lincoln, the final new team on the docket for Kingsville, have yet to play a game this season, with these six games across three days serving as their opening weekend.

Kingsville will then end its weekend with another matchup with UCCS at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday before an 11:15 a.m. getaway game on Sunday against Lincoln.

"Overall, the goal for this coming weekend is to continue to grow as a unit and get our pitching staff some more innings and put them in a fire," Salinas said. "Our offense is starting to click on all cylinders."

There WILL be live stats and streams on FloSports for all five of TAMUK's contests - they are linked on the team's schedule at Javelinaathletics.com.
