Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville got back in the win column in a big way, taking down Western New Mexico 64-13 at Javelina Stadium on Saturday.
The Javelinas' (4-6, 3-5 LSC) offense erupted against the Mustangs (2-8, 1-7 LSC), scoring 43 points in the first half in-route to scoring a season-high 64 points. Quarterback
Jack Turner threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns in the first 30 minutes as the Javelinas bounced back after dropping their previous three games.
This week's game also served as senior day for the Javelinas, where the team recognized 18 seniors who will graduate in the 2025-26 academic year.
"Just can't say enough about Javelina Nation," said Head Coach Scott Parr. "For everyone to show the support that they did tonight for these seniors. I'm proud of this football team. Javelinas fight is what I've noticed and there's a lot of pride in Javelina Nation."
A pair of records were broken by the Javelinas this week as well, with sophomore receiver
King Phillips setting the all-time single-season receptions mark while Turner became the first QB to ever throw for 3,000 yards in a single season.
Saturday's contest was off to as good of a start as the Javelians could have hoped for, as Turner connected with
Ivan Thomas for a 13-yard TD and converted the two-point conversion to get up by eight. The special teams then went into their bag, recovering an onside kick that was quickly cashed in for another touchdown, this time from Turner to Phillips, to go up 15.Â
There was no slowing down though for the offense, as after a quick WNMU three-and-out, the Hogs got back in the endzone again thanks to a Turner to Thomas TD for 30 yards. Three sacks from the Javelina defense, contributed by
Doug Brooks,
Daniel Tupuola and
Tre Robbins, gave the ball back to the offense who got right back in the endzone thanks to a 41-yard catch and run from
Kevin Holmes Jr.Â
The second quarter was a much more methodical quarter for the Javelinas, who opened up the quarter with a seven-minute TD drive capped off by
Edward Chumley to go up 36-0. Western New Mexico did get on the board with a touchdown of their own, but the Hogs answered right back with a seven play, 53-yard drive capped off with a
Lawrence Starks TD to go up 43-7 entering the break.
The second half opened with a long touchdown drive from the Mustangs, who drove seventeen plays to get in the endzone. They would not convert on the extra-point try, as Brooks got a piece of the kick to keep it a 30-point lead. The Hogs would get the Mustangs back too, as Turner connected with
Kenhide Atunrase for his fifth TD of the game.Â
The Javelinas called Turner off after that, but the offense was not done clicking. After
Julian Payne got his second INT of the season,
Brendon Strickland found
Courtney Brown Jr. for each of their first TDs of the season.
Mills Dawson also got some run late in the ballgame, leading the Javelinas on their last scoring drive of the game.
