San Antonio - Texas A&M-Kingsville could not hold on late as it fell in overtime to St. Mary's, 81-83, at Bill Greehey Arena on Friday.
The Javelinas (6-6, 2-4 Lone Star Conference) were up by 16 with a little over 10 minutes left in the second half before the Rattlers (7-4, 4-1 LSC) executed a 28-12 that pushed the game to overtime. From there, St. Mary's handled the Javelinas and took the victory in San Antonio.Â
Isaiah Payne led the Javelinas with 19Â points with
Zyon Little adding 13.
Jordan Henderson nearly finished with a double-double with 9 points and eight rebounds. Payne also finished with a career-best seven assists on the night.
The game tipped-off with the Javelinas scorching hot from three, hitting their first four 3-pointers from
Allen Singleton, Little and
Jake Arnold. St. Mary's brought the game to just a two-point contest as the game wore on, but eight points from
Nate Lacewell led the charge to get the Javelinas back up by nine heading into the half.
Heading into the second half, the Javelinas got into an offensive flurry with the Rattlers, as both teams scored a combined 10 points in just a minute and-a-half. Little would then hit another 3-pointer to give the Javelinas an early 14-point lead.
Despite the double-digit lead, the Rattler kept hanging around the Javelinas. Even when Texas A&M-Kingsville held a 16-point lead, St. Mary's began chipping away at the lead for the Javelinas. The Rattlers were able to score nine of their points off Javelina turnovers, and eventually tied the game with just a second left in the second half.Â
Carrying the momentum into overtime, the Rattlers opened up extra time on a 9-3 run that essentially carried them through overtime and sealed the win in San Antonio.
