Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville dominated Oklahoma Christian, 79-65, to get back in the win column Sunday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas (7-8, 3-6 Lone Star Conference) held the Eagles (5-9, 2-7 LSC) to just 37.8 percent shooting from the floor and 21.4 percent from three. Spearheading this defensive performance was the job the Javelinas did on Oklahoma Christian's Keondre Young.
The fourth leading scorer in the conference did finish the game with 13 points, but a majority of the points came through free throws as the senior guard for the Eagles shot just 2-16 from the floor and did not make a 3-pointer.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Kingsville scored 70-or-more points in their fifth straight game, the first time since the 2020-21 season. This was added by a 42-point second half, their most this season since scoring 59 in the second half against Eastern New Mexico (12/18).
This offensive performance was thanks to the efforts of
Zyon Little, who went on a personal 11-6 run as the second half tipped off, making three-straight shots from beyond the arc.
Nate Garcia and
James Livingston also hit their shots from deep and the Javelinas pushed out to a 23-point lead early in the second half.
As the second half wore on, Texas A&M-Kingsville began to tighten its grip on the Eagles defensively, only surrendering four field goals in the final 10 minutes of game time. To close out the game, the Javelinas turned to
Allen Singleton, who made three field goals and assists on a
Nate Lacewell dunk that sealed the win for the Javelinas.
Singleton led the Javelinas with a career-best 20 points, Little finished with 15 points and
Isaiah Payne scored 11. Lacewell and
Jordan Henderson both finished with a team-leading six rebounds and Livingston had a game-high three steal performance.
Texas A&M-Kingsville continues its homestead on Thursday as it takes on No. 8 DBU Thursday at 7:30 CST. Fans of the Javelinas can either watch on Flosports or follow live coverage at JavelinaMBB on Twitter.
