Kingsville - The women's cross country team ran the fastest average time in program history and swept the podium on its way to a win at the Our Lady of the Lake Saint's Classic, while the men's team put a pair in the top five, taking second.
In the women's six thousand meter race, each of the top four finishers were Javelinas, who battled through tough conditions to key the day's lowest score of a 22, and a win at the Friday-morning Invite.
Seniors
Maya Espinosa took home first place overall with a 22:12.1, and
Odette Fernandez (22:21.4) finished second overall. Junior
Ivanova Yanes (22:26.6) took third and senior
Janeth Chacon (22:50.8) grabbed fourth. Sophomore Maddy Blair (25:37.5) in twelfth rounded out the scoring for the Javelinas.
The team's average time of 23:03 beat out OLLU in second, Texas Lutheran in third, and Nelson in fourth
"The top four accomplished our goal, they produced a historic effort," Assistant Coach Zach Hall said. "The average of 23:03 is the best ever for a 6k in school history."
The men's team posted quite the performance themselves, taking second place behind only the hosts. Once again it was the freshman leading the way for the Javelinas.
Roberto Alejandro continued his spectacular collegiate debut season with a second-place finish in the eight thousand meter race, running a 26:47.8.
Robert Trevino (27:26.0) and Alan Baez (27:59.2), both also freshman Javelinas, finished in fifth and 10th place respectively. Two more freshman,
Jesus Rodriguez (29:10.5) and
Juan Martinez (29:44.6), rounded out the scoring for the Javelina men, finishing in 16th and 19th overall respectively.Â
"With the muddy conditions, the 8k became a dog fight," Hall said. "This lineup will look great in three weeks at the Lewis Crossover."
TAMUK will now have a few weeks off before their next race, the Lewis Crossover in Romeoville, Illinois, on October 12th. Full results from this weekend's race are available here.
