,Alamosa, Colorado - Texas A&M-Kingsville fell in its first road contest of the season to Adams State, 3-1, at Plachy Hall Gym on Wednesday.
The Javelinas (3-2, 0-0 Lone Star Conference) could not get anything going offensively for themselves, only netting a .062Â attack percentage in the match. Combined with 33Â attack errors, the Javelina's offense struggled to find their rhythm.
The Grizzlies (2-3, 0-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) got off to a fast start in set one, securing an early 7-3 lead. Texas A&M-Kingsville would get within two points thanks to a
Rylan Pollard kill, but the Javelinas would not get closer as they fell in set one, 25-16.Â
Set two did not start much better, with two straight service aces from Adams State securing them the early lead. The Javelinas would then rip off a 11-3 run, punctuated by a
Natalee Rush solo block. The Grizzlies would make it interesting late in the set, but the Javelinas slammed the door on the comeback setting the score to one set apiece.
In set three, Texas A&M-Kingsville would be the one to get off to the good start, scoring the first four points of the set. Another solo block by Rush would set the score at 7-3, but that would be the largest lead the Javelinas would get. Adams State would go on run after run in the third set, and despite a late rally by the Javelinas to bring it within four. Texas A&M-Kingsville could not seal the deal.
Facing a must-win set four, the Javelinas and Grizzlies would battle to a 6-6 standstill early in the set. Adams State would score a quick four points, but the Javelinas would rally back to bring it within one after a Grizzly attack error. That would be the closest the Javelinas got however, as the offense could not keep pace with Adams State. A late run would make it interesting for Texas A&M-Kingsville, but it would not be enough.
Pollard led the way with 11 kills for the Javelinas,
Meghan Stiefer would add 10 kills to go with a team-high 15 digs and
Ayanna Jackson would chip in six.
Elisa Carli would notch 22 assists and Rush would lead the team with 5.5 total blocks.
Texas A&M-Kingsville is back in action on Friday at the Mountaineer Invitation hosted by Western Colorado. Their first match is against the Academy of Art at 10 am.Â
