SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team opened up a new series against the St. Mary's Rattlers on Friday evening, dropping game one of the four-game series, 3-9.
The Javelinas (21-14, 19-14 LSC) have an eight-game win streak snapped, having swept their last two series. The Rattlers (13-18, 11-18 LSC) have now won three of their last five games.
St. Mary's got on the board first, scoring two runs apiece in the first and second innings. The Javelinas responded in the third with three runs of their own to cut the gap to one.
Michael Cervantes picked up the Javelina's three RBIs on the night in one swing, knocking a three-run home run to left field.
After two scoreless innings, the Rattlers put up three more runs in the sixth to make the score 8-2. The Javelinas could not muster any more runs across the plate as St. Mary's brought one more home for an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
Javier De Alejandro (1-5) is credited with the win for St. Mary's while
Carter Poulson (3-3) is credited with the loss for TAMUK.
The Javelinas and the Rattlers will meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one of the back-to-back is scheduled for 2 p.m. with game two scheduled for 5 p.m.
