KINGSVILLE, Texas - Trailing by three runs at the halfway point, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team put together an explosive fifth inning en route to a series sweep of the Oklahoma Christian Eagles.
The Javelinas (21-13, 19-13 LSC) sweep their second series in a row and pick up their eighth straight win. The Eagles (6-24, 6-22 LSC) fall to 3-5 over their last two series.
The Eagles were the first on the board once again with two runs in the opening frame then following it up with another run in the second. The Javelinas responded in the bottom of the second with two runs of their own.
Michael Cervantes got things going for the Hogs with a bang, homering to left-center field for a two-run home run to score
Kyle Perales.Â
OC stringed together two more one-run innings to enter the fifth with a 5-2 lead before the Javelina bats started to heat up.
Garrett Thompson got the Javelinas back within two runs with a single to left before
Ramsey Amador followed up with a sacrifice fly, bringing home
MJ Rodriguez and cutting the deficit to one. With two runners still on base,
Jake Chapman delivered the Hogs' third RBI at-bat in a row in a big way, going yard for a three-run home run to jump the Javelinas out to a 7-5 lead.
Once more, the Eagles managed to bring one run across the plate in the sixth to cut the lead to one before Amador delivered the coup-de-grace - another three-run home run to left field to push the Javelina lead to 10-6.
With a four-run lead in hand, the Javelina defense did its job, seeing out the final two innings with only one run allowed to secure the win.
Amador finished the game with four RBIs on one hit and a sacrifice fly while Chapman and Cervantes were right behind with three and two RBIs respectively. This was the Javelina's eighth game on the year with multiple home runs and fifth game with three or more in a single game.
Carson Shepherd (3-0) is credited with the win for the Javelinas and
Julius Rivas picks up his fifth save on the year. Brendan Kirchhoff (1-4) is pegged with the loss of OC.
