Javelinas drop second matchup against Rattlers 54-62 evening up season series

TAMUK falls late to St. Mary’s tying up the season series at one apiece

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Basketball Team took to the road again Saturday, heading to the Alamo City, San Antonio, Texas where they would fall to the the St. Mary's Rattlers 54-62.

"I thought in the first half we had great pace and poor shot selection." said coach Michael Madrid. "21 one pass 3PT attempts. We missed so many opportunities to score and in the second half we came out flat and forgot you have to make shots to win. This has been the story of our season. Poor offensive execution and lack of shot making. We will watch film and get ready for our next opportunity".

Junior Mia Rivers led the way this time for the Javelinas with 12 points, 6 Assists, 5 Steals and 4 Rebounds. Right behind her in the points column was Senior Georgia Ohiaeri who put together an 11-point 6 rebound performance on the afternoon.

The Javelinas were outmatched on the afternoon in terms of shooting as every shooting category the Rattlers led in including, FG% (27.3% - 39.6%), 3PT% (24.1%-35.3%), and FT % (61.1% - 90.0%). The Javelinas were able to be on top in one defensive category however as they had 11 steals while the rattlers only had 8. Rebounding was much of the same as in total the Rattlers were able to out board the Javelinas 47-33, however the Javelinas were able to come away with more offensive rebounds pulling in 9 as opposed to St. Mary's 6.

The game would Start slightly slow as it would take 2:07 game time to finally get a score for either team, luckily the score being a Mia Rivers three putting the Javelinas up early. Aina Maynou would follow suit as she would drain a three of her own putting the Javelinas in command early. St. Mary's would eventually get going as they would trade buckets mid-way through the first putting the score at 8-6 with 3:14 left in the quarter. Janessa Payne and Shelby Ray would both add layups to increase the lead to 6 before another Rattler layup would bring the lead to 4 with 1:21 left to go in the first. A couple of Jayde Tschritter layups and a Georgia Ohiaeri layup would bring the quarter to an end making it 16-13 Javelinas on top heading into the second.

The Javelinas would get going quick to start the second as Tschritter would sink a three with only 16 seconds off the clock putting the Javelinas up 19-13 with 9:44 still to go. Ohiaeri would follow with a three of her own to increase the lead to 7 and Veyda Lake would make a fastbreak layup putting things at 24-18 Javelinas in front with 7:37 to go. It would take more than 3 whole game minutes before either team was able to convert a bucket but at the 4:06 marker in the game St. Mary's was able to sink a three, followed right by a Ray three to keep the Javelina lead at 6. Two Rattler free throws would be followed by another Ohiaeri three and Lake layup boosting the Javelin lead to 9 with just over a minute to go in the half. St. Mary's would make two free throws that would send both teams to the locker room.

Both squads would come out of the locker room cold as it would take the Rattlers almost 3 game minutes to put up a basket and it would take the Javelinas almost 5 before Alyssa O' Malley would get on the board. Another Drought would ensue as a whole 2 minutes and 14 seconds would pass before Ray would be sent to the line and make a free throw. Maynou would add on and make it a double digit lead with a jumper putting the Javelinas up 10 with 2:30 left in the third. The Rattlers would respond however with a 7-0 run bringing the lead down to 3 with 1:14 left to go in the third. A free throw by Maynou would put the lead at four 41-37 before a Rattler three with two seconds left would put the score at 41-40 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth would start out with the Rattlers going on an almost seven minute 13-1 run taking the lead from the Javelinas and putting the game at 42-53 with 3:04 left. Ohiaeri would trade free throws with the Rattlers before they would sink a layup growing their lead to 13 with 2:37 left. The Javelinas would chip away however going on an 8-0 run of their own before the game would end with the Rattlers going on a 5-2 run ending the game at 54-62.

The Javelinas will be at home next time out facing off against the Oklahoma Christian Eagles Thursday February 8th, at 5:30 P.M. in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
