Javelinas heating up at home as they take down Oklahoma Christian 73-43

TAMUK starts homestand out with a win over eagles on Play4Kay night

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Basketball Team played back at the friendly confines of the Steinke Physical Education Center this time out, where they would take down the visiting Oklahoma Christian Eagles 73-43.

"Just a tremendous team effort from start to end." said coach Michael Madrid. "I thought we started off with a ton of energy. Our players came out with a sense of urgency and defensively I thought we kind of set the tone early. It's always great when shots are falling, but just to look at our stats and see the number of players we have in double figures, just a complete team effort. Kind of lost some intensity in the third quarter and a little in the second quarter but really proud of how we finished and just a great home victory".

Junior Mia Rivers led the way this time for the Javelinas with 17 points, 9 Assists, 3 Steals and 3 Rebounds, tying her season high in scoring. Right behind her in the points column was Sophomore Shelby Ray who put together a 16-point 11 rebound performance on the night making it her fourth double-double this season..

The Javelinas were Dominant on both sides of the ball in this one starting off with leading in the three major shooting categories, FG%, (48.4%-28.6%) 3PT%, (30.0%-15.8%) and FT% (83.3%-61.5%). The Javelinas also were able to swipe 11 steals to the Eagles 4, as well as grab 41 rebounds compared to the oppositions 33. The Javelinas also shined in sharing the ball having 22 assists on the night compared to the Eagles 11.

The game would start out fast for the Javelinas as Georgia Ohiaeri would open up the game with a three giving the Javelinas the lead with a whole 9:43 left to go in the first. Oklahoma Christian would respond with a layup, but Veyda Lake would match that with a layup of her own putting the Javelinas up 5-4 with 7:01 left. Mia Rivers would hit back to back layups, Shelby Ray would hit a turn around jumper, and Aina Maynou would hit a layup all to combine for a one minute and 46 second 8-0 run putting the Javelinas up 13-4 with 5:15 left. The Eagles would hit a layup but it would be the last points of the quarter for them as the Javelinas would go on an 11-0 run 9 of which belonged to Jayde Tschritter three balls. This run would end the quarter as the Javelinas would go into the second with the lead 24-6.

The Javelinas would keep things rolling in the second as they would start out with a Rivers jumper before the Eagles would respond with a 5-0 run putting the score at 26-11 with 8:25 to go in the first. Rivers  would then go on a 4-0 run of her own with a jumper and a layup to extend the lead again Javelinas in front 30-11. Abby Bala would get in on the scoring as she would add a layup before both sides went cold for a full two minutes and one second of game time. It wouldn't be until the 0:47 marker that Bala again would score, dropping in a layup making it 35-15. The last 47 seconds would see no scoring meaning the Javelinas would go into the half with the lead 35-15.

Coming out of the locker room Veyda Lake would put a hook shot through to start the scoring, but the eagles would respond right back with a layup of their own which started a 9-2 run cutting into the Javelina lead putting the game at 39-24. Ray would put two layups together going on a solo 4-0 run putting things at 43-24 with 5:51 left in the third. A minute and 13 seconds of game time would pass before another score would be recorded and it would be the Eagles who drain a three followed directly after by a Ray pull up jumper. Another full minute would pass before scoring again and  this time it would be Mia Rivers with a layup followed by an Oklahoma Christian jumper. Scoring would be scarce as the last 2:10 of the quarter would see no scoring until two Rivers free throws would send the game into the fourth Javelinas up 49-31.

The fourth would start out fast for the Javelinas with a Georgia Ohiaeri three before the back-and-forth battle began. Both squads would go bucket for bucket until roughly the 4:20 point in the game where the Javelinas would really turn it on and take off on a 13-2 run. This included 5 points from Ohiaeri, 4 from Bala, and two a piece from Maynou and Ray. This run would seal the game for the Javelinas as they would walk away winners 73-43.

The Javelinas will be home again next time out facing off against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Lions Saturday February 10th, at 1:00 P.M. in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
