LAWTON, Okla. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team finished up their final road trip of the season as they took on the Cameron Aggies on Saturday afternoon. Despite shooting 42.4% from the field on the game, a slow start to the first half dug a hole too deep for the Javelinas to come back from, falling to the Aggies, 73-88.
The Javelinas (6-20, LSC 4-17) finish their road schedule 2-13. They have the chance to finish the home schedule 5-7 on Thursday night as they play Texas A&M International.
Though starting the game 3-for-6 from the field, the Javelinas faced a seven-minute scoring drought in the opening ten minutes of the game, not finding another basket until the 9:59 mark of the half. Once the drought was broken, the Hogs kept pace with the Aggies through the rest of the half, being outscored only be a single point, 21-22, in the final ten minutes of the first half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Javelinas kept up the good pace they had set, trading basket for basket with Cameron throughout much of the second stanza. The Hogs were great from the field in the second half, shooting over 50% going 17-of-32 and 5-of-15 from deep. Unfortunately, the deficit created by the opening dry spell proved too much to overcome as the Aggies kept pace with the Javelinas right back, taking the win.
Nate Garcia had a day for himself, leading the Javelinas in scoring for the first time in his tenure in the Blue & Gold, finishing with a career-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Garcia pulled down six rebounds as well, also a career-high and only one board behind leading rebounders
Kendrick Washington and
Jason Clark at seven.
Washington and Clark had good days on the statsheet as well. Washington finished right behind Garcia with 14 points, going a lights out 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Clark recorded nine points contributing a 4-of-4 performance from the charity stripe.
Allen Singleton continues to turn in great offensive performances, scoring in double digits for the third time in five games, totaling 11 points as well as three apiece of rebounds and assists alongside a steal.
C.J. Smith similarly has scored 10 or more points in five of his last six appearances, finishing the game with 10 points a team-leading three assists, tied with Singleton. He also recorded two steals - his 17th total game with two or more steals and sixth game in a row.
