Men's Basketball prepares for final road trip of the season

The Hogs get ready to take on two LSC opponents they've yet to face this season

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team is on the road for the final time this season as they take on the Midwestern State Mustangs and the Cameron Aggies. This will be the first time the Javelinas have taken on either team this season.

Last weekend, the Javelinas (6-18, LSC 4-15) split 1-1 with a victory over UT Tyler, 55-47, before narrowly falling short of an upset over No. 4 Dallas Baptist, 79-86.

First up this weekend for the Hogs, they take on Midwestern State on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 before making the trip to Lawton, OK to face off against Cameron on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Kavon Booker had a huge two games for the Javelinas on the weekend, racking up 18 total rebounds - team leading in both games - as well as 21 points and three apiece of steals and blocks. Against DBU, Booker recorded the team's first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

C.J. Smith continued to be the offensive leader for the Hogs, leading the scoresheet for the team in both games with 12 against UTT and 22 against DBU, picking up five assists in each game as well and seven total rebounds. Smith also snagged two steals in both games.

Kendrick Washington was a heavy contributor to the team as well, finishing the week with 20 points and 9 rebounds, including 14 points against DBU. Allen Singleton was also a notable presence on the floor against DBU as well, tying with Booker in points at 15 and picking up five rebounds and assists.

MSU holds the upper hand in the series against TAMUK, 19-8, but the Javelinas have gotten the best of both upcoming opponents recently, going 4-1 against MSU and 5-0 against Cameron in their last five meetups.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS

The Mustangs are fighting for an outsider's chance at making the LSC tournament, sitting at 8-11 in conference and going 2-2 in their last four games.

MSU have more than one weapon on offense with four players averaging double digits. Mason Gibson currently averages 16.4 PPG while Pierre Sanders and Bakari LaStrap average 13.8 and 12.1 PPG respectively.

The Mustangs have been solid on the boards this season with three players totaling 120 or more rebounds.

Sanders is one of said players with 120 rebounds exactly while also leading the team in assists at 111.

The team has also been active with their hands on defense, racking up 194 steals - 42 more than their opponents - and more than 100 blocks as well.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

The Aggies are also sitting on the bubble for the LSC tournament, currently 11-8 in the Lone Star while also going 2-2 in their last four.

Similar to the Mustangs, five Aggies average 10 or more points per game, with Lavell Brodnex and Jaylan Thomas both leading at 13.6 PPG.

Brodnex and Thomas are both also top rebounders for the squad at 163 and 128 respectively, with Brodnex leading the team in that category as well.

Thomas is the Mustang's main three-point threat, shooting 40.7% from behind the arc on 140 attempts - more than half his total shot selection.

Cameron has had a solid upper hand in the rebounding battle this season with a 5.6 per game margin, but they also turn the ball over more than their opposition.
