Box Score PORTALES, N.M. - After bringing home 16 runs the day before, the Javelina bats stayed red hot, blasting five home runs en route to a 14-8 victory over the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Sunday afternoon.
The Javelinas (6-7, LSC 5-7) win their third straight and take the series, their first series win of the season. The Greyhounds (5-7, LSC 5-7) drop their first series of the year after splitting their first two against Angelo State and TAMIU.
Both teams started off strong, scoring two runs in the first inning.
Jacob Rosales got things started off with a single to right before
Jake Chapman knocked the first home run of the day over the fence.
Things kept rolling all day for the Javelinas, who scored in seven of the nine innings.
Kyle Perales was next to add his name to the home run list as the first man up in the second, and
Vincent Sanchez followed it up to make it back-to-back homers for the Hogs in a three-run inning. Chapman collected his third RBI of the day as well, hitting a double to left field to score
Dalton Kramer.Â
After a scoreless third inning, the bats warmed up once more as Chapman tallied a fourth RBI in the game on a single to bring home
Eric Garcia.
Ramsey Amador added a single of his own right after to help Kramer cross home plate once more to put the score at 7-2.
The game saw two more runs from the Javelinas with a run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. Garcia earned an RBI thanks to a fielder's choice to score
MJ Rodriguez, who reached base on a walk to start the fifth inning. In the sixth, Rosales got himself on the RBI sheet, blasting a home run down the left field line for the fourth TAMUK homer of the day to make it 9-4.
Two runs were tacked on the scoreboard again in the seventh thanks to a Sanchez single to left to score two. Finally, the Javelinas earned the final three runs of the day in the eighth as Amador went yard for the fifth time for TAMUK to earn two RBIs as Sanchez grabbed his fourth RBI of the game later in the inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds brought home four runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 14-8, but it was too little too late as the Javelina defense closed out the ninth in three straight batters to cruise to the win and the series victory.
Daniel Cardona (1-0) picks up his first win of the season for the Javelinas as Julian Lopez (1-1) is credited with the loss for ENMU.
UP NEXT
The Javelinas are in Laredo on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. for the second and final non-conference game against TAMIU. Afterwards, the Hogs are back at Nolan Ryan Field for a weekend series against Cameron from Friday through Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday.
