Kingsville - It's Regionals season, and the Kingsville cross country teams are on their way to Denver, Colorado for the South Central Regional Championships, which are set to be run on a chilly Saturday morning in the mountain state.
The races will be run at Washington Park in downtown Denver, where it is expected to be roughly 38 degrees fahrenheit at race time for the men - 11 a.m. central time - and 40 during the women's race time - 12:15 p.m. central time. Race times, however, are subject to change, as there is a very high chance of snow in the area overnight and into the early hours of the morning. Assistant Coach Zach Hall said competing in the snow will be a new experience for nearly the entire team. Running in the altitude of the mile-high city will certainly be challenging as well.
"I think if we can come close to everyone running their 8k PRs in the middle of the 10k, it should be good," Hall said. "For most people, this is their first time at altitude and we want to make sure in the coming years everyone is prepared."
The top three finishing teams will automatically qualify for the NCAA National Championships, as well as the top two individual runners from non-qualifying teams. Additionally, the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Committee will select ten at-large bids from each side to compete at nationals.
The field of teams at Regionals consists of the Lone Star Conference teams as well as those from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Javelinas top two runners on the women's side have set their sights on an All-Region-finish, an honor earned by those who finish in the top 25 individually in each race. As far as the team's finish is concerned, however, Kingsville will be without senior
Odette Fernandez, who has been the team's third best runner this year.
"We will be out our number three, which hurts the team score," Hall said. "Maya and Iva are shooting for All-Region, which is a harder title than All-American some years."
Results from the Championship races will be posted live
