Men's Cross Country

Women take 6th, men 8th for the Javelinas at the Conference Championship

Kingsville - On a foggy Saturday morning, the Kingsville cross country women's and men's teams placed sixth and eight respectively at the Lone Star Conference Championship at Dick Kleberg Park in Kingsville.

Seniors Ivanova Yanes and Maya Espinosa each earned all-conference honors for the Javelinas courtesy of ninth and 11th-place finishes respectively. They represent the first all-conference performers for the Lady Javelinas since 2015, when Jade Guerrero placed 11th. It is also the first time since at least 2006 that multiple Javelinas finished all-conference for the women's team.

"Maya and Iva had great races," Assistant Coach Zach Hall said. "Those are some of the best conference performances in school history."

Yanes ran a 21:44.66, edging out a Dallas Baptist runner by just over one second to secure a single-digit individual finish. Not far behind her, Espinosa ran a 21:47.25 for her 11th-place finish. Senior Odette Fernandez crossed the finish line third for the Javelinas, running a 23:02.13 for 30th place. The team's fourth senior, Janeth Chacon was the fourth finisher for TAMUK, coming in 51st overall with a 23:45.23. Rounding out Kingsville's top five was freshman Yaritzy Acosta in 69th place with a 24:24.50.

The men's eight-place finish was its highest team placement since 2018, when the team also finished eighth place. Many of the Javelinas ran all-time personal records (PRs) on their way to the fastest team average time in 15 years.

"Our men all had strong last 3ks," Hall said. "We walked away with the majority of the team having PRs."

In just his second collegiate race, freshman Nirmit Dahiya finished in 30th place, and was the Javelinas' first finisher with a 25:41.81. Not far behind him was fellow freshman, Roberto Alejandro, who ran a 25:53.32, finishing in 32nd place.

Jose Garcia and Robert Trevino were the team's next finishers, finishing less than a second apart in 52nd and 53rd place respectively (26:45.11 and 26:46.29). Freshman Alan Baez-Corpus rounded out the top five with a 67th-place finish, running a 27:24.79.

The team will be back in action for Regionals in Denver, CO on November 16th.
