Javelinas take down Stallions in exhibition game

Kingsville - The Kingsville women's basketball team made quick work on its NAIA foes, the North American University Stallions, taking them down 77-45 at home in the team's final exhibition game before the regular season.

All eight Javelinas that checked into the game scored at least five points, grabbed multiple rebounds, and posted double-digit plus-minuses. Leading them was senior guard Abby Bala, who dropped a double-double in points and assists.

"I joked with the team here at the end, I said 'man, she had 10 assists, if some of you made some shots, she might have 14 or 15'," Head Coach Michael Madrid said. "I was super proud of her and her effort."

Four of the Kingsville's eight players were newcomers playing their first game in front of Javelina fans. Three, guards Logan Borchardt and Addisyn Parker and forward Jordyn Hernandez, combined for 25 points, 19 rebounds, and five steals.

While the newcomers were a key part in the win, the team's balanced scoring was key from start to finish.

"We always talk about team, team, team, where everything is about the team," Madrid said. "Our mentality is, hey, it may be three people one night, maybe it's four people one night, the next night it may be three other players. So, I think that's just having really good balance on your team, having really good players that understand our system and also understand that hey, maybe tonight's not my night."

Kingsville held its opponent to just nine first-half points and forced NAU to turn the ball over 23 times throughout the game. The team won't have another opportunity to play in the SPEC in front of its home crowd for nearly six full weeks, then they take on West Texas A&M at home on December 15.

"Honestly, I think talking about it and just having mature young women on our team that understand, hey, this is what college basketball is like, and sometimes you got to go on some road trips," Madrid said.
