Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville got back on track with a 76-71 victory over the College of Biblical Studies Wednesday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas (3-2) were able to pull away late against the Ambassadors (0-5) thanks to a very balanced offensive attack. Nine Javelinas scored at least five points and every Javelina who touched the floor scored at least once to stave off the Ambassadors offensive attack.
"That's a team that's really tough, really physical with a bunch of different and two cat-quick guards," said Head Coach
Omar Gonzalez. "Coach Young does an incredible job, unrelated to the game Coach Young and I go way back so I have a lot of love for him."
Bryson Goldsmith led the team with 16 points on 66 percent shooting from the field.
Jordan Henderson,
Jarin Hall and
Daniel Sanchez all finished second with seven points each.
Isaiah Payne had a team-high five rebounds and
Allen Singleton led the way with four assists.
A large portion of how the Javelinas got their balanced attack was led by their defense, which forced 23 turnovers and scored 24 points off of turnovers. This was evident early in the contest, as a early block from
David Oriaku led to a 3-pointer from
Jarin Hall that knotted the game up at 10-10.
After timely free throws from Henderson and
Zyon Little gave the Javelinas a slight lead entering halftime, the offense came out swinging in the second half. A second-chance effort from Goldsmith put the Javelinas up by 10 early in the half, and the Javelinas would never waver from that moment on.
Texas A&M-Kingsville hits the road on Saturday as they kick off conference play against Texas A&M-International. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on Flosports or follow live coverage at JavelinaMBB on Twitter.
